Senior Design
Overview
Senior Design Lecture (ELET 4308) and Senior Design Lab (ELET 4208) are two courses designed to help Seniors in the Computer Engineering Technology program develop their Senior Project Idea. The school-year long project encourages seniors to come up with innovative solutions to real-world problems. The courses allow seniors in the College of Engineering Technology (CET) program to go through the process of research, team building, idea proposal, and then they move onto the implementation stage where they design and execute their idea. At the end of the process, the senior class presents their project or prototype in a conference-style presentation in front of peers, professors, and industry advisors.
Prerequisite courses are Electric Circuits (DC/AC), Digital Systems, Embedded Systems, Semiconductor Devices and Circuits, and Sensor Applications, which are offered in the Engineering Technology Department. The first phase of Senior Design is a three-credit course, ELET 4308, where the students will learn to brainstorm ideas and work in teams to propose a cost-efficient and practically feasible project. The second phase of Senior Design is a two-credit course, ELET 4208, which will have the students design and implement the proposed idea in ELET 4308. The semi-annual Undergraduate Research Symposium recognizes and honors the senior design projects. It takes place at the end of the fall and spring semesters every year. A panel of faculty, industry experts, lab managers, and peers will observe the presentations and give awards for the best research work.
Testimony
“Senior Project for me was very useful because it prepared me for graduate school by teaching me how to start researching a topic while developing a project. It allowed me to bring all the knowledge I had accumulated from previous semesters and apply it to a real-world problem. I also learned how to lead a team and balance different group dynamics which I use now as an organization leader and a TA.”
– Alessandro De La Garza, Fall 2018 – Spring 2019
“Senior Project allowed me to understand concepts that I couldn’t just learn but had to experience. We had to create a schedule that could work in the long term and maintain a budget that was reasonable. In order to complete our project, we had scheduled meetings with teammates, mentors and industry advisors. These concepts of the Senior Project reflected the possible encounters we could have in our careers and helped prepare us for them.”
– Annie Vallejo, Fall 2018 – Spring 2019
“Senior project served as a steppingstone to launch my career. I took my passion for my brothers and designed an application to enable children with a verbal disability to be able to speak. While my team was unable to complete the application, I was able to use what I learned in combination with my passion to land a job with RoviSys. My senior project was the highlight of my interview and allowed me to display my ability to learn, lead, and deliver in a challenging environment without being discouraged by setbacks.”
– Mark Aranda, Fall 2018 – Spring 2019
